Skiing (France…for now!)

I didn’t learn to ski until I was a fully grown adult, but boy was I glad I did… It combined so many of the things I love; ice cold beers, epic scenery, exercise, friends, cheese…whats not to like??

Weirdly, we’ve only skied in France - something I’m keen to amend but here’s a snapshot of the resorts we’ve been to;

Val Thorens - The highest resort I’ve skied in and it was noticeable - especially when all your liquids exploded when you opened them. We skied here with friends so it’s safe to say that the mountain bars, apres and nightlife were great! But the skiing was epic too - you can get out to Meribel and Courchevel so there’s lots to explore if you’re up for it.

La Plagne - Loads of blue runs here, which was great for me as it was my 2nd time skiing. I think it’s even known for being “intermediate friendly”. We went here with friends over New Years so my memory is vague and mainly focused around the apres…

Les Gets - Les Gets was our first family skiing holiday with our son and it was perfect for exactly that. A nice small yet cosy family friendly resort and quite quiet on the slopes too. You can ski into Morzine if you have the legs for it.

Les Deux Alpes - Quite a small resort, but perfect for a chilled week. Some lush wide slopes, long runs and nice easy chairlifts to get some mileage in swiftly.

Tignes/Val d’Isere - so much skiing to be done! My ski slope knowledge is minimal so I was well impressed that Tignes is linked to Val d’Isere; you can cover off so much ground, it’s brilliant. Tignes was great for kids too - they have a swimming pool (with slides!), a playground, sledging (natch), igloos to explore, snow maze/castle, curling. Loads to keep them entertained. Plus we were more than entertained by the Cabaret at La Folie Douce - so much fun! Get on those tables!

If I can recommend anything about skiing in France it’s the food - make sure you get your chops round a Tartiflette (a bowl full of cheese, bacon, potatoes & onions), your classic cheese or meat fondue and then the Raclette - cheese under a heater to melt and scrape over potatoes, meat, bread, you name it….drooling at the thought….
